According to The American Lung Association & American Cancer Society, Lung Cancer screening with a CT scan is the first quick painless screening test proven to reduce deaths from lung cancer in individuals with more of a chance to get lung cancer such as smokers and former smokers. CT screening is shown to detect lung cancer at an early stage when it can be successfully treated saving lives. Catching lung cancer early is the key to successful treatment. Currently, only 15% of people diagnosed with late-stage lung cancer will survive 5 years.
In Iowa, 2,300 new cases of lung cancer are diagnosed each year. Lung cancer accounts for 1,800 deaths in this state annually, more deaths than colon, pancreatic, breast and prostate cancers combined.
Who will most benefit from Lung Cancer Screening?
- Individuals 55-77 years of age.
- Who have smoked an average of 1 pack of cigarettes per day for 20 years.
- Who are current smokers or have quit in the past 15 years.
- Who are currently in good health with no lung problems.
What is the Lung Cancer Screening procedure like?
This CT scan is quick and completely painless. You will be asked to lie on a padded table for about 10 minutes while the CT scan is performed. There is no needle sticks or liquid to drink and no special preparation for this type of scan. You may eat or drink before scan. Come comfortably dressed without jewelry or metal in your clothing over neck and chest area. Slacks with a belt and zipper will be just fine.
Do I need a doctor’s order for this screening test?
Yes, we ask that you talk with your doctor and discuss your personal chances for lung cancer to decide if this screening test is right for you. Your doctor will give an order for the study and help you with scheduling your lung Cancer screening.
How will I get the report?
Your Lung Cancer Screening will be read by BVRMC’s Board Certified Radiologist and results sent to your doctor. Your doctor will call you with results. If you have access to UnityPoint MyChart, your results will also be there.
What is the cost?
Medicare will pay for one CT Lung Screen per year for individuals who meet screening criteria.
For those without Medicare coverage the cost is $180.00 due at the time of registration for service. Most insurance plans do not currently pay for lung cancer screening.
The CT program is accredited by The American College of Radiology.
