Why do I need a mammogram?
Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in women. Mammograms are considered to be the single most effective screening test for breast cancer. In fact, there is no other cancer screening test in medicine as effective as mammography.
How do I prepare for my mammogram?
On the day of your exam:
Wear a two-piece outfit. You will only need to remove your top and bra.
Don’t apply deodorant prior to your exam. It can show up on images as white spots and cause an unnecessary return visit.
Avoid using lotions, powders, creams or perfume on the day prior to or on the day of your exam.
Please let us know if you have an insulin pump or glucose monitor.

How long does a mammogram take?
A mammogram typically takes 15-30 minutes to capture targeted images of the breast. Appointments, which include additional diagnostic procedures such as biopsies or ultrasounds, may last longer.
Will it hurt?
A number of factors can affect whether a mammogram hurts including breast structure, anxiety about the mammogram, or if the position of the machine is not right. Women who experience pain should notify the technician. A mammogram should not hurt so much that it deters future tests.
What if something is found on my mammogram?
A positive result on a mammogram can be frightening, but does not necessarily point to cancer. Most questionable and positive mammograms require further diagnostic tests.
When should I get a mammogram?
Women should have mammograms yearly starting at age 40. Talk to your physician about any symptoms or changes in your breasts, or if breast cancer runs in your family. They may recommend that you have mammograms before age 40 or more often than usual. Women ages 20-39 should have a clinical breast exam every three years and self exam monthly.
