Buena Vista Regional Healthcare Foundation’s AWARE fund purchased scalp cooling therapy equipment for patients undergoing chemotherapy, potentially reducing hair loss while providing a sense of normalcy throughout cancer treatment.
Thanks to donor support, BVRMC now offers the Amma™ Scalp Cooling System by Cooler Heads, a portable FDA-cleared medical device for adults designed to help reduce chemotherapy-related hair loss. Developed by a technology entrepreneur and breast cancer survivor, the system was created to give patients more control over one of the most visible side effects of cancer treatment.
The scalp cooling device is used before, during and after chemotherapy to help protect hair follicles and support faster hair regrowth following treatment. While some hair thinning may still occur, scalp cooling can significantly reduce hair loss for many patients.
The user-friendly device allows patients to move as needed during treatment while receiving continuous scalp cooling. Each patient receives a custom-fitted cooling wrap to reuse throughout their treatment plan. The cooling unit is stored and used at the BVRMC Oncology & Infusion Center and is available for eligible patients throughout their chemotherapy journey.
BVRMC staff provide education and support throughout the process, and Cooler Heads offers additional online training for patients using the system.
Coverage for the Amma Scalp Cooling System varies by insurance plan. Patients are encouraged to contact their insurance provider to learn more about their coverage options.
“Patients who have used scalp cooling therapy have shared that having the option to help reduce hair loss allowed them to feel more like themselves throughout treatment,” says Deb Colshan, Director of BVRMC’s Oncology & Infusion Center. “Something as simple as preserving their hair can provide comfort and help maintain a sense of normalcy during a very difficult time.”
Fighting cancer is an emotional battle as much as it is a physical one. For many patients, preserving their hair can help maintain a sense of identify, self-esteem and dignity throughout treatment.
“This is a wonderful example of how donor generosity directly impacts patient care,” says Katie Schwint, BVRMC Executive Director of Community Development. “The AWARE fund allows us to provide resources that support not only a patient’s medical treatment but also their comfort and overall well-being during a difficult time.”
The AWARE fund helps purchase items not covered by insurance for patients fighting cancer at BVRMC, such as hats, wigs, grocery cards, chemo shirts, mastectomy products and other comfort items. Funds are raised through community donations, helping to make a difference in patients’ lives.
