Buena Vista Regional Medical Center recently hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Event at the Harker House to celebrate and thank the many helping hands who make a difference in the hospital every day.
During the event, BVRMC volunteers were taken on a guided tour of the Harker House. Volunteers also enjoyed a variety of desserts while connecting with friends.
BVRMC currently has over 50 active volunteers and three volunteer seamstresses who donate their time and talents throughout the year to BVRMC. Over 2,300 volunteer hours were donated to BVRMC in 2025.
“Volunteers play such an important role in creating a welcoming and supportive environment at BVRMC,” said Lisa Alesch, BVRMC Volunteer Coordinator. “Their generosity, positive attitudes and willingness to serve truly make a difference for everyone who walks through our doors.”
Volunteers provide assistance throughout the hospital in many capacities. Daily, volunteers can be found helping patients navigate to their appointments, working in the BVRMC Auxiliary Gift Shop/Café Latte, helping with clerical projects and assisting in different departments within BVRMC. Volunteer seamstresses sew various items used by patients such as walker bags, pediatric themed pillowcases, coloring bags and anti-ouch bags for mastectomy patients.
“We are fortunate to have volunteers who are so passionate about giving back,” said Katie Schwint, BVRMC Executive Director of Community Development. “Their dedication enhances the care experience for our patients and supports BVRMC’s mission in a very meaningful way.” If you would like to learn more about BVRMC’s Volunteer Program or become a volunteer at BVRMC, please contact Lisa Alesch at 712.213.8619.
