Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Fitness & Health Center Fitness Specialists Nancy Marshall and Melissa Iehl, along with Evan Franzmeier, Fitness Center Manager, recently became certified Cancer Exercise Specialists.

The Cancer Exercise Specialist Advanced Qualification was developed for health and fitness professionals to teach them hands-on skills needed to guide patients through treatment into recovery and survivorship, with a focus on individualized programming.

“We recognize that each cancer patient’s experience is different and we are here for you,” states Melissa. “We are ready to help cancer patients and survivors realize their health and fitness goals.”

The certification program is thorough and touches on all cancers. Since there are always new advances, you must get recertified every two years.

The certifications for this training were funded by donations made to BVRMC A.W.A.R.E.

A.W.A.R.E. provides over 200 patients a year with hats, wigs, medications, mastectomy products, gifts, gas, & grocery cards. Donations are accepted for A.W.A.R.E. all year long as well as during the annual 5K and children’s fun run held on the third Saturday in September.

“The A.W.A.R.E. program is committed to investing back into the community and this is one way we can give back,” states Evan.
