Joni Boese Receives 2017 Wound, Ostomy, & Continence Nurse of the Year Award for Iowa Affiliate of the WOCN SocietyBuena Vista Regional Medical Center is proud to announce that Joni Boese, BSN, RN, CWON, has received the 2017 Nurse of the Year from the Iowa Affiliate of the Wound, Ostomy, & Continence Nurses Society (WOCN). Joni received the award on Thursday, October 5 in Des Moines at their annual meeting.

Joni earned her BSN in 1982 and began her nursing career on the Medical/Surgical unit at BVRMC. In 1986, Joni earned her Enterostomal Therapy Nursing Certification. She was the first RN at BVRMC to achieve this designation. She began building the ET clinic services by providing wound and ostomy care on a part-time basis for out-patients, in-patients and homecare. This is where the WOC Center of Excellence at BVRMC began.

Joni has mentored five nursing partners in WOC. Each of these five partners achieved their WOC Nursing Certifications by way of Joni’s leadership, mentorship, support and by acting as preceptor when appropriate.

Joni’s current partner is Alecia Heuton, RN, BSN. Alecia states, “Joni is a wonderful asset to the WOC community. Her caring and professional attitude toward patients is evident in her every day work. She presents a wealth of knowledge and expertise from her years of experience as a WOC nurse. Everything she does in her practice is evidence-based and the best possible treatment for each individual patient. I am so fortunate to be able to learn from the best.”

Joni is committed to continuing her own education, as well as diligent in ensuring that the WOC professional practice remains evidence-based with a high level of quality. She has acted as a consultant to numerous WOC nursing professionals throughout the state and is highly respected and admired by her colleagues.

“Joni is highly respected by patients, staff and physicians. We are lucky to have her knowledge and leadership at BVRMC,” states CEO Rob Colerick.
