Meet Our Foundation Board Members

Duane Miller, Chair

Mr. Miller is a Certified Public Accountant and a Partner in the firm of Rosene, Pickhinke, Peters & Co., PC in Storm Lake. He and his wife MaryAnn, a teacher at the Storm Lake Middle School, have lived in Storm Lake for over thirty years and have three grown sons. Duane has previously served on the Board of Directors of several community organizations including Faith, Hope & Charity, the Buena Vista University Foundation, the St. Mary’s Foundation and the Storm Lake Area Development Corporation, now known as Storm Lake United. Duane says “Buena Vista Regional Medical Center is one of the ‘crown jewels’ of Storm Lake. It helps make this area a great place to live and work."

Josh Newhouse, Vice-Chair

Newhouse moved to Storm Lake in 1996 and is a graduate of Buena Vista University. Newhouse joined Thrivent Financial as a Financial Associate in 2005. Josh and his wife, Laura, have one daughter who was born in 2012. He has served on several Boards and been involved in many activities in the community. Josh states, "A strong medical center is necessary for a growing community. I am pleased to play a role in the continuing success of Buena Vista Regional Medical Center."

Mitch Lyman, Secretary/Treasurer

"I have lived in Newell all of my life and I am the second oldest of six siblings. My wife Lauri and I have two grown children, Mandy and Justin and we are also blessed with four grandchildren.

I have been a sales consultant in the auto industry for the past 25 years in Storm Lake.

In April of 2014 I was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. My family doctor recommended I have my surgery in Storm Lake. I trust Dr. Barber with my life and went with his recommendation and am really glad I did. After going through my surgeries and chemo treatments, I would not have wanted to be anywhere else. Dr. Dierking and the medical team at BVRMC are the most professional and passionate people you would want to help take care of you.

I am honored to be on the Buena Vista Regional Healthcare Foundation Board of Directors."

Jan Worthan

I grew up on a farm near Newell and now live with my husband, Gary, north of Storm Lake. Together we farm and have a small trucking company. We have three sons and 3 grandchildren. I have been an American Family insurance agent since 1991.We both believe strongly in community involvement and have served or volunteered on many committees and boards over the years. Gary is currently a State Representative in the State Legislature. Besides the Foundation Board, I serve on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Tourism Committee, Watanye, and Hy-Noon Kiwanis.

Brenda Halverson

I am a retired School Nurse having served the Alta School District for 29 years. My husband, Frank, and I farm south of Linn Grove. We have two married daughters and four grandchildren. We are members of Trinity Lutheran Church, Linn Grove. In 2009 I began serving on the board of trustees for the BVRMC and am privileged to serve with individuals that want to provide excellence in care to all people of this region. In my spare time I enjoy music, golf, and spending time with my grandchildren and family.

Tim Smith

I am a licensed funeral director with Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. I was raised on a farm near Webb, IA and have resided in Storm Lake since 1999. My wife, Erin, and I have four children. I am a member of the Hy-Noon Kiwanis and St. Mary’s Catholic Church. In my free time I enjoy playing golf and spending time with my family.

Terry Mason

I grew up on a farm east of Rembrandt, Iowa, and now live with my husband, Bill, on the south side of Storm Lake. I was born at what was then Buena Vista County Hospital as were my four children. Together Bill and I have six children and ten grandchildren. I am retired from the Schaller-Crestland School where I was the Elementary Secretary, past school board member and board President. In the Summer I volunteer as the Static superintendent of the Sac County Fair. I am also a volunteer at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center and am a lifetime member of the BVRMC Auxiliary. BVRMC has changed over the years to meet the needs of the people it serves. I am excited and honored to be a member of the Foundation Board with the hope of continuing that progress well into the future."

Suzette Radke

Suzette has lived in the area for over 28 years, farming south of Alta with her husband Mike. She is currently the Vice President for Finance and Administration at Buena Vista University and has been at Buena Vista for 25 years. Suzette says, "I am excited to serve on the Foundation Board as it is part of ensuring the continuing growth of Buena Vista Regional Medical Center. Having a facility like this is vital to our communities and I feel it is important to do my part in helping support our local facility."

Howard Hatlelid

Married to wife Shirley. Between us we have seven children, twenty grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. Born in Canada, grew up in Minnesota. Moved to Storm Lake in 1964 with Federated Insurance and retired from them in 1992 and joined the Stille, Pierce and Pertzborn insurance agency. "I enjoy traveling, yard work, old cars, playing cards, community activites, our church and good friends. I'm active in the hospital because it is essential to our community and we all want good local health care."

Duane Queen

I am a retired Presbyterian pastor having served the Lakeside Presbyterian Church for 29 years from 1979-2008. My wife, Donna, and I have 3 children and four grandchildren. I have been active in many ecumenical events in the Storm Lake community and have served on many boards, such as Gingerbread House, Faith, Hope and Charity, Ecumenical Institute, Hy-Noon Kiwanis Club, and on the Board of Trustees for Buena Vista University. In my free time I raise Quarter horses, love fishing, biking, woodworking and reading.

"I chose to serve on the BVRMC Foundation because we are fortunate to have Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in our community. The quality health care in our community that is provided by BVRMC improves our quality of life. By serving on the BVRMC Foundation board I am able to help provide continued improvement for the health care in our community."

Emily Sievers

Emily and her husband, Steven, moved back to Albert City in 2014, where Steven grew up. She and her husband have two children, Emmett and Eliana. Emily manages Steven's trucking company and is also the Treasurer for her father-in-law's trucking company. Besides playing with her children and hanging out on the lake, Emily is involved in card making and other home crafts, the Albert City MOPS group, "Mom's night out", and St. Mary's church in Storm Lake. Emily graduated with a marketing and management degree from Northwest Missouri State University. She has previously organized fundraisers for the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and worked as customer relations manager at a financial planning company. Emily says, "I am extremely honored to be a part of the Foundation and look forward to helping Buena Vista Regional Medical Center continue to keep our family and friends well cared for."

Larry Schultz

I am the Branch Manager for MetaBank for the main bank and plaza bank in Storm Lake. My wife, Carolyn who is a nurse by profession, and I have lived on our acreage north of Storm Lake since 2000. We have three children and eight grandchildren. Over the years, I have served on a number of state and local foundation and community service boards.
